Asunto: Write a paper for blogtalk.net!

I was excited to learn, through Sebastian Paquet, of http://blogtalk.net, a conference in Vienna, May 23 - 24, 2003. The topic is Weblogs for personal and collaborative publishing, but I think more generally, anything about micro-content-management systems that relates to blogs somehow.

The conference is very inexpensive (35 euros), and if you present a paper, it's free and they'll even pay for your travel and lodging, at least as much as their budget allows.

I don't know for sure about my future, but it's likely I'll be here in Lithuania, especially if all goes well. It's a cheap overnight bus ride to Vienna. Blogging is attracting the people who are remaking the Internet as a social space for independent thinkers.

They say they'll pay for travel, so if you have anything to say about blogging, reach inside and pull it out. Be creative! This is a good place to share a wild idea. Why shouldn't you come from India, Africa, China or the United States to share it? (It's a European conference, but it doesn't hurt to ask, and there are speakers like David Weinberger coming from the USA). Microsoft is one of the sponsors, so maybe they are footing the bill. We should find out more about the out-of-Europe people.

I encourage you to submit a proposal (500 words = less than a page) or a paper (1500 words = less than two pages). You have to turn in your idea, or your draft of a paper, by February 28th.

Mine is going to be "The Algebra of Copyright" - I want to explore what happens to micro-content under various licenses. To what extent are people using the various kinds of Creative Commons licenses, Public Domain, Primarily Public Domain, copyleft, etc., in blogs, wikis, discussion groups, and sites, and to what extent the material can mix in theory, and what are people doing, in practice, are they respecting the licenses at all? How should the licenses apply if we are to have an algebra of copyright? We can do a lot of interesting research just by using Google to see who is linking to the various Creative Commons licenses.

I'd love to have a co-author for many reasons, but especially because I never can be sure if I'll actually be able to go. But let's try to have a European meeting of Minciu Sodas in conjunction. Matt Mower is writing a paper. Hey Lucas! copensamos!

Andrius
